This past weekend I bought Stitch 'n Bitch, some variegated yarn, and size 8 needles thinking I would have a scarf potholder coaster by the end of the weekend. Girls, I'm here to tell you...I must be a visual learner. I'm just going to have to have someone physically show me how to do this. I just cannot decipher the pictures/instructions in SnB, and the videos just go to fast for me to see what they are doing. (I really shouldn't be trying to learn this week because I have a smocking project going on that I need to finish first - but you know how that goes).
I have a family reunion this weekend, so I've decided that I'm taking my knitting paraphernalia along because SURELY someone will know how to knit! I do have another option, but I really hated to do it. A knitting group meets every Monday at the local library, and I can go there to have someone teach me (but I hated to use their knit time to teach stitches to me, ya know?)
If any of you knit, how did you learn?
I too am a show-me learner. I took a knitting class with some friends. I couldn't decipher the knitting illustrations for the life of me, but after having taken the classes, I get what the pictures mean now! (Also, it is really helpful to have someone tell you when you are doing something wrong and why it's wrong.) Good luck with the basics (if you get the basics, you might be able to fumble through the other stuff)!
Posted by: Giao at August 3, 2004 05:00 PMI finally got someone to show me. I was basically doing everything right, but I wasn't doing it well.
Just keep trying; I'm sure you'll get it.
Posted by: Rachel Ann at August 4, 2004 10:30 AMI learned from the videos at Stitch Guide. I had to move the little bar across the Quicktime window at a snail's pace so I could see exactly what she was doing. That's how I learned. I couldnt' do anything from the illustrations. In the Stitch and Bitch book I love how she explains things and I was able to figure some things out from her. It has just taken lots of practice. I'm slowly getting better. My first completed thing was full of so many mistakes, the second thing, only one mistake and now I'm working on something and it's actually turning out pretty cute. I am no ready to tackle sweaters yet but I think I'm ready to graduate from scarves to hats soon!
Posted by: Allison at August 6, 2004 09:05 AMHi Charla!
Keep at it! I learned from the SnB book (I already knew how to crochet, so that might have helped). I do admit, though, that those damn pictures were kinda annoying! I spent a couple of hours just sitting there, trying over and over and over. I actually had a co-worker try to show me, but she confused me more (I knit left-hand style). So the book was my primary source.
Oh you should try out the library thing -- I'm sure they would be more than happy to help out! Good luck, and I can't wait to see your coaster! LOL :)
